I found this young striped s.kunk on the side of a notorious animal killing road I bike through. Sad that he had to die, but this was such a lucky find, I can’t pick up s.kunks we see on trips because they’d have to be in the car for hours. I’ve never even seen a dead or live skunk in town, but I find this guy 10 minutes away from home on my bike, and I’ve wanted a baby skunk specifically for a long while AND he’s in great shape. Nobody tell my family there’s a skunk in the freezer until I figure out what to do with it!
We found this buddy a few days ago, we don’t know how he died but he was in the stream, in a wild part of the park where we walk Kalel. I moved it aside (I used one of the poop-bags I always have in my bag as a glove) so it wouldn’t keep polluting the stream. For a few days, the whole area smelled horrible, but now it doesn’t smell anymore. It’s both rainy and hot these days, I guess it helped kinda mummifying it. We’re soon moving but I hope I’ll have the occasion to grab the skull before we leave !
Also found a dead f.awn beside the road near my house. The stink was god awful in this heat.
I also got a roadkill f.ox on Saturday! Had to traipse up the road at night so I’d be less obtrusive with my big buck knife and a transparent comforter bag stuffed with a bloody ani.mal corpse. Fairly certain I didn’t attract too much attention…
I didn’t get any before photos – sorry about that – but the f.ox had been smashed from the abdomen down, its intestines hanging out. Everything above was fortunately salvageable. So it’s been just three days after I secured it in my rot cage in the woods, temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s with a deluge of rain, and I go back to see it’s already bone and fur! Dayum that was a pleasant surprise.
Poor thing was in the Walmart parking lot… Stray or abandoned that probably some huge truck didn’t see and accidentally hit. I may come back to pick it up later…
Got a little surprise while mowing the lawn this morning. I’ve named him “Dance Man” haha. Debating if I should keep him mummified, or clean him up for the bones.
